Solids deposits such as wax, hydrates, asphaltenes, scale and emulsions, and problems associated with multiphase flow behavior, such as slugging and erosion, are highlighted as being some of the main challenges facing deepwater field developments and operations in the industry today.
The conditions under which these issues occur can be predicted using modern steady state, thermodynamic and transient simulation tools. Combined with our experience and integrated approach, we apply suitable design criteria and strategies to create robust technical solutions to ensure flow from the wellbore to the host facility over the life of field.

Areas of Flow Assurance Expertise
Our areas of expertise include but are not limited to:
- Fluid Characterization: We use PVT analysis and laboratory reports to understand the fluid behavior through the expected range of operating temperatures and pressures, and assess chemistry issues such as wax, asphaltenes and scale.
- Understanding Well Performance : Using reservoir conditions, the productivity index and completion information, we can determine wellhead flowing conditions over the life of field, and calculate the maximum wellhead shut-in pressure.
- Steady-state Hydraulic Capacity: We perform thermo-hydraulic analysis to determine capacities for flowlines and pipelines, determine operating envelopes and size water injection, gas injection and chemical injection systems. Our expertise extends from single well tie-backs to complex production networks.
- Thermal Analysis: We consider risks such as wax deposition and hydrate formation to determine heat transfer coefficients for various insulation configurations. Coupled with performing hydraulic analysis, we can also predict liquid drop-out in rich gas systems, and top of line corrosion.
- Transient Analysis: We simulate all modes of operation including Normal Operation, Turndown, Shutdown, Cooldown, Depressurization, Pigging and Restart.
- Slugging Management: We assess operating envelopes and flow regimes to determine the propensity and impact of surge volumes at the host.
- Chemical Injection Systems: We perform calculations to determine hydrate inhibitor volumes (MEG, MeOH & LDHI), determine chemical injection strategies and injection line sizing.
- Artificial Lift: We screen various forms of artificial lift such as gas lift and multiphase boosting to quantify the net overall benefit to production.
- Flow Assurance Strategies: From the results of the steadystate and/or transient analysis, we formulate strategies for solids and liquids management.
